Martial Arts

Ananda Martial Arts and Fitness primarily teaches the Korean martial arts of Taekwondo and Hapkido, but incorporates techniques and methods from a variety of  martial arts.

Taekwondo is a “hard” style martial art, where an opponent’s force is met directly, and has ancient roots more than 2000 years old. Hapkido is a “soft” style martial art, where an opponent’s force is redirected, and has a modern history. Both “hard” and “soft” martial arts are effective tools for self-defense and combat, and studying the two forms gives a student a balanced range of techniques. Taekwondo has nine original styles and, together with Hapkido, are among dozens of Korean martial arts.

Modern Taekwondo focuses on kicking and punching, is known for it’s devastating jump and spinning kicks and is now an Olympic sport. Hapkido includes many Taekwondo techniques, but is distinguished by it’s throws and joint locks. Taekwondo is an empty-hand martial art that does not employ the use of external weapons, whereas Hapkido students study several weapons, including the short stick, cane, rope, and sword.

Ananda Martial Arts & Fitness teaches a number of Taekwondo and Hapkido seminars. When students reach a basic level of proficiency, AMAF also teaches Traditional Weapons, including the Spinning Sickles. To schedule these or other AMAF Seminars, contact Master Ellis today at (510) 682-4398 or AnandaMAF@gmail.com.
