Taekwondo is a Korean martial art with roots more than 2,000 years old. Tae Kyun, an early form of Taekwondo, dates back to 57 B.C.E. The stone relief mural above, which dates back to 37 B.C.E., honors warriors of the Koguryo Dynasty. Some 400 years later, Tae Kyun evolved into Soo Bak Do, or “the art of punching and butting.” In 1955 the Nine Kwans came together to establish Taekwondo, an empty-hand “hard” style martial art.

“The true science of martial arts means practicing them in such a way that they will be useful at any time, and to teach them in such a way that they will be useful in all things.” — Miyamoto Musashi
